
Elina Avanesyan, First Armenian Athlete in WTA Top 40, Met Armenian Community in Glendale
Glendale, CA – March 9, 2025 – Renowned tennis player Elina Avanesyan has opened a new chapter in Armenian sports history, becoming the first Armenian athlete to break into the Top 40 of the WTA world rankings. With the support of the Keron Development Foundation, Elina obtained Armenian citizenship, proudly representing Armenia on the international stage and contributing to the country’s sports development. To celebrate this remarkable milestone, Homenetmen Glendale Ararat organized a special event with Elina and the Armenian community on March 9 at the Burbank Tennis Center. The gathering included a Q&A session with Elina, a tennis clinic for young athletes, and an exhibition match with young Armenian-American tennis players Tiffany Papazian and Kristina Nordikyan.
California State Assemblymember Jessica Caloza and Burbank Mayor Nicki Perez opened the event with official remarks, congratulating Elina on her historic success and
welcoming her to the community. Elina then engaged in an inspiring conversation, sharing her career journey, the challenges of professional tennis, and her connection to Armenian heritage. Following the discussion, 30 young Armenian athletes participated in a tennis clinic, where Elina and experienced coaches offered hands-on training, valuable insights, and mentorship.
The event concluded with an exhibition match, allowing attendees to witness Elina’s remarkable skills up close. Participants also had the chance to meet her, take photos, and receive autographs, creating unforgettable memories for Armenia’s next generation of tennis stars. In the evening, a private dinner provided an intimate setting for guests to connect with Elina, celebrate her accomplishments, and discuss her vision for the future of Armenian tennis. Glendale Mayor Elen Asatryan, among the evening’s attendees, expressed her admiration for Elina’s achievements and reaffirmed her commitment to promoting Armenian sports internationally.
This event also marked the Keron Development Foundation’s first official fundraising initiative, with all proceeds directly supporting sports development in Armenia, expanding sports programs, and improving athletic opportunities across the country. Elina Avanesyan’s rise to 36th in the WTA rankings represents a turning point for Armenian sports. Her dedication, talent, and national pride inspire young athletes and pave the way for future generations to dream bigger and aim higher.
