Goddess Anahit’s Bronze Statue Exhibition in Armenia
The first-ever exhibition, “Mother Goddess: from Anahit to Mary,” was displayed at the History Museum of Armenia. The iconic artifact, previously housed at the British Museum, is featured in this historic exhibition, allowing the Armenian public to connect with a powerful symbol of their heritage.
Goddess Anahit, a powerful symbol of fertility, motherhood, and wisdom, holds an esteemed place in Armenian history, mythology, and culture. Discovered by chance in 1872 in the city of Satagh, fragments of her bronze statue, including the head and hand, have journeyed through Constantinople and Italy before being acquired by the British Museum. The head was purchased from dealer Alessandro Castellani, and later, the hand was also acquired by the museum.
This extraordinary exhibition is the result of a groundbreaking agreement between the History Museum of Armenia and the British Museum and marks a monumental moment in Armenia’s cultural landscape, as it brings this vital piece of Armenian heritage back to its homeland, if only temporarily.
